World Illustration Awards - Longlist selection. ✨ Inspired by a spirited, paralyzed rescue dog named Hope—whom I met while working at a dog sanctuary—this piece is a tribute to the distinct look rescued dogs give visitors: the quiet, unwavering expression of hope that their future will hold more kindness than their past. 6.5" x 8.5" Stone Lithograph Print. Art Direction by: Curtis Bartone.
Challenge
Stone Lithography fascinated me and I was keen to explore this technique.
Solution
Creating this piece allowed me to explore not just technique, but also the emotional depth that comes with depicting animals. With this illustration, I experimented with how I render values while using different materials i.e. litho crayons on limestone. For the final print, I also experimented with various eastern and western paper options to add to the emotional impact of the work. Given the emotional tone of this piece, I settled with eastern paper for the depth in the range of dark values it was able to retain. I hope (pun intended) this resonates with you.
